As with all countries, France has some very specific legal and regulatory requirements when it comes to insurance. For example, it is a legal requirement that most French property insurances must include terrorism cover. Policies typically cannot be cancelled mid-term and “tacit” or automatic renewal is commonplace. There are very specific and formal rules how a policy is to be managed. Liabilities based on Napoleonic Code may differ from what you are used to.
